How to Tune Up an Air Cooled Volkswagen

Here are some tips on how to tune up an air cooled Volkswagen. Most people can learn to tune up an air cooled Volkswagen engine with just a bit of practice.
A tune up is important for any car, but it is even more so for an air cooled engine. An air cooled engine will vibrate much more than a water cooled one. This vibration will cause engine components to wander from optimal settings a little quicker. The better tuned your engine is the less it will vibrate.
When you tune up an air cooled Volkswagen engine you should follow the procedures in a particular order. Some systems are dependent upon other systems to operate properly. For example an accurate carburetor idle mixture cannot be achieved unless the compression, ignition system and valve clearances are correct. In addition, compression readings will be adversely affected by improper valve clearances. You can take your VW to a mechanic, if you can find one who is familiar with air cooled engines, or you can do the work…

If you are reading this then chances are that you either own an air cooled Volkswagen or you want to. No one can blame you for that! Classic air cooled Volkswagens are the best cars on the road!
If you are thinking of getting yourself an old VW you have to decide which type and how much money you can spend. Beetles are the easiest and lowest priced VWs you can get as long as you aren’t particular about the model, however they still aren’t cheap. Whether you decide you want to own a bug, bus, karmann ghia, or other VW you will next need to know your price range budget.
If you can afford it and you just want to have a nice car right now then shop for one that is in excellent condition. Many people prefer to buy a cheaper car that is a “fixer upper” because they enjoy crafting and restoring an air cooled car back to life. Before you decide to buy a “fixer upper” look deeply into yourself and…

Hello all. Great to see a forum on VWs, especially 1600 'pancakes', fuel injected. I sold my Fastback in ~1989 for $200. It was starting to fall apart from extreme use. Gawd, I loved that car. In later years I learned of the Notchback, which now replaces my ultimate dream car (was: 1957-58 two-tone Belair).

Interesting story: About 3 years ago, I found a 66 NB in Lima, Peru and a guy who was quite fluent in English (my Spanglish is pitiful), and seriously considered driving it back or at least paying for ocean freight to LA. I missed the window, but this was a classic "bought for Grandma, kept in a garage", with 60 or 70k miles. Everything original.

Anyhoo, just though I introduce myself. I hope to find a NB or SB someday for restoring. I do know of a FB automatic in southern Wyoming in some guy's back yard. Its been sitting in the elements for years, but looks structurally sound. Let me know if I should pursue this or if someone here wants me to.

Hey, do you guys meet up in car shows?

Cheers!

Hello, Just got a 1970 VW Squareback. The original owner says it is a 71 but the title says 70. It is fuel injected. I do not know what the differences between years are. I would be inclined to stick with it being a 70 since that is what is on the title.

It is in need of a lot of work. So my dilemma is; should I restore it to as original as I can or should I customize it. I will probably end up selling it to work on another car. So, I would like it to be worth as much as possible.

I will try to take some pictures and post them.

A compression test is a basic part of a routine tune up for an air cooled Volkswagen engine. With these instructions you can check the engine compression yourself.
Compression is a measurement of the pressure that builds up within a cylinder as the piston rises and both valves are closed. For the fuel mixture to burn properly a certain range of pressure is required.
The two main factors that affect compression are the condition of the piston rings and the valves. Obviously, the valves need to be fully closed on the compression stroke to avoid loss of pressure.
Before you check the compression the engine needs to be at normal operating temperatures. Let your Volkswagen idle until the engine is completely warmed up.
Turn off the engine and begin removing the spark plug connectors from each spark plug. Unless you are very familiar with the firing order mark each wire with…

How To Adjust Air Cooled VW Valves

Step by step instructions on how to adjust the valves in your air cooled VW engine.
Keeping your valves adjusted will help your air cooled engine to run smoother and more efficient. Improper valve clearances are one of the primary core causes of mechanical and efficiency problems in air cooled engines. Due to the nature of the air cooled engine keeping your valves adjusted will have a major impact on your classic Volkswagens life and performance.
If the valve clearances are too small the valves will remain open too long which will cause them to over heat. If clearances are too large the opposite will happen, the valves will stay closed too long and will interfere with the intake of fuel and exhaust of burned fuel. Either way, if your valves aren’t adjusted correctly your air cooled Volkswagen will not run smoothly. Read on to learn how…

Many people prefer to buy a cheaper car that is a…
