can someone help me with some 1600cc engine info
ok i am mechanically inclined but never had a vw.i just got a 76 bradley gt with a 1600 motor.i need to adjust valves as i can hear a little chatter.my friend who knows a little more about these tells me my chassis is a 77 based on floor plate, that he thinks heads are 60 something single port.how can i tell what block is? verify yr of heads and find out if hydralic or solid lifters and valve gap? also the guy i got from has always added lead substitute on fillup.i have been adding 1/4 bottle per five gallons. is that right and do i really need to add that? thanks for any info

RE: can someone help me with some 1600cc engine info
There is a code stamped on the engine case right below where the generator/alternator stand mounts. It will bw letters and numbers. With this code you can find out the year of your engine.Your engine should have solid lifters,as hydraulic lifters require machining of the case and probably not be done on a stock engine. The valve clearence may depend on the year of your engine. But most likely will be .006 for both exhaust and intake. This is according to the John Muir book "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive,A Manual Of Step By Step Procedures For The Complete Idiot" This book is an Excellent source of information on keeping your VW running, and for doing your own repairs, tune ups and maintanance. It'a also a funread. If you post your chasis # and engine code,I can look it up for you so you will know what you are working with.(there is a chart in this book)
He explains things in plain language for the ordinary guy.As for the lead addative,if your heads have ever been rebuilt or replaced,(they probably have been at some point) you won't need to add the addative. The new style silicone bronze valve guides and stainless steel valves don't need the added lubrication from the lead addative.
